Svadhisthana: The Sacral Chakra

The second of our Seven major chakras is known as the sacral or sexual chakra. The Hindu designation is Svadhisthana. The sacral chakra is orange in color and governs the ovaries and testes which are the endocrine glands located in the abdominal area.
The specific location of the sacral chakra is approximately two fingers below the navel (belly button). As a result, the genitourinary system, including the kidneys, connects with the sacral chakra. It would be understandable in that instance that the element associated with this chakra is water.
Hence, the sacral chakra is concerned with assimilation. The digestive process begins and ends with water. We use water to break down our food, to move it through the digestive system, to acquire any energy that can be had and send that energy to our cells. As the food is broken down, any unwanted by-products of digestion are released through the kidneys.
The Hindu associate this chakra with the tongue and taste. Native Americans associate all water creatures with the sacral chakra, including dolphins, which are known to be very highly evolved and capable of expressing great joy. Is it surprising that orange is the colour of joy and fun and socializing? Orange people are lovers of life. Because of their happy, childlike tendencies, orange people remind us of the child in us. Just happy and carefree with not a care in the world.
Orange people ALWAYS defend the weak. They have quick and sharp minds, but seldom have the time or the patience to study since they are always very busy chasing new experiences. They do this because they are in constant need of stimulation and change. It is very important that orange people plan and organize their lives so that they are personally satisfied. Besides being smart, orange people are also very creative. They are also more practical than intellectual. They are very generous.
If this chakra is unbalanced there will usually be a tendency or an urge to overindulge in either food or sex which then causes obesity, food intolerance, chronic skin condition or possibly impotence or dis-ease. It is very easy for orange people to become addicted to drugs and alcohol because they are the epitome of joy and want to feel at all times.
Although orange people seem free, independent, happy, and confident they have an inner insecure side that they rarely show. They very often have a hard time with self-discovery and getting to truly know themselves. This is usually the reason orange people run from relationships that become too demanding or (to them) too complicated. Their mottos are usually “Don’t worry,” “be happy” and “everything will be alright”.
The Orange-gold six petal lotus flower is symbolic of this chakra. The first lumbar vertebra is the associated spinal location of the sacral chakra.
A good way to stimulate the sacral chakra is meditation using the vowel sound Oo or the seed sound Vam, pronounced “vum”. Always breathe from the diaphragm when doing sound meditation.
An exercise called the pelvic tilt. Stand with knees slightly bent. Thrust the pelvic forward, then backward. You will probably feel the energy as it is activated in the chakra area.
My Canadian instructor once told me that singing the song from the movie “The Sound of Music” was a good way to stimulate one’s chakras. Do you remember that song? Do(e), a deer, a female deer. Ra(y), a drop of golden sun, etc. (It always brings a smile to one’s face). As you go through each note, you are also stimulating each chakra. (Seven notes corresponding to seven chakras).
Until next time, keep singing and be blessed.
