What is the origin of your modality?
As stated in the previous article, colour therapy has been used for thousands of years for many different purposes. It was used by many civilizations including the ancient Egyptians. It was found to have a profound effect on us on many different levels- physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Colour exists everywhere; from the earth to the heavens it is seen and felt.
In addition to colour therapy, I also practice Reiki which was developed in Japan in the twentieth century by Dr. Mikao Usui. Reiki is an energy practice involving the channeling and delivery of universal life energy; an inanimate energy found everywhere within and around us. The term “reiki” literally means “spiritually guided life energy”
Why did you choose the colour therapy modality?
I didn’t really choose any modality to work with. I feel in my heart that I was chosen so to speak. I have always been interested in alternative medicine. Even as a young child helping my two grandmothers “cook up” a remedy for many ailments, I knew that one day I would do the same. I also knew that there had to be another way of healing and maintenance besides chemicals and pills. I was even more determined to “find another way” because I had so many health related problems.
Besides asthma, I have many allergies to chemicals, food, medication, and environmental agents (i.e. mold, dust, weeds). I was determined to find “another” way to help myself. In that promise, I decided that if I were ever able to find an alternative for myself, I would also extend that aide to others who were interested. Colour therapy happened to be the modality that I accidentally stumbled upon while trying to help myself live a healthier life.
Before colour therapy, there was prayer, sound healing, reiki, breath work, meditation, crystal therapy, and reflexology. I have found that all of these modalities offer something special to my health and healing. As a result, I have studied and participated in many alternative therapy modalities.
No one modality is the “Number One” modality; all are helpful in one way or another. I went to Canada to receive my training in Colour Therapy. I received my Reiki training here in the United States. My goal as a practitioner is to help others attain health balance without the use of so many pills and drugs. Colour Therapy has aided me in achieving that goal. I have been using these modalities in health (Reiki since 2004, Colour Therapy since 2010) to achieve a healthy life.
What issues does colour therapy address?
Colour therapy, as stated previously, affects us all in many different ways. It even affects us in ways of which we may not be aware. For instance, have you ever noticed that certain colors affect you in certain ways? Have you noticed that certain pictures or paintings affect you in certain ways? Have you noticed that your mood is affected by a particular outfit {color}? Have you noticed that, very often, your mood changes when a cloudy day becomes a bright, beautiful sunshiny day or vice versa? Have you noticed that there are some people that you absolutely love being around and others not so much? All of these examples are related to colour.
Did you know that EVERYONE possesses a certain COLOUR PERSONALITY? Did you know that your colour personality is in play in every aspect of your life? For example, a “red” person has a very observable security and confidence about them. To them, life is life and they tackle it with confidence and courage. Yellow people are intellectuals. They are hungry for knowledge and are usually researchers or explorers. They are very sensitive, kind, well-mannered and polite and also usually good listeners. These are only two examples of colour and its effects on personality. Colour can be a positive aspect or a negative aspect of everything with which we come in contact.
Based on what is available to us, we make the choice to use more positive or negative elements. By using Colour Therapy, one can balance the aspects that are considered negative and bring them back into a balanced state. I think it would be safe so say that colour therapy brings balance to an unbalanced state of existence.
Colour therapy can be used to aid in the alleviation of pain, both physically and emotionally. It should be noted, however, that colour therapy should NEVER be used in place of a medical doctor or prescribed medication. It can, however, be used as an additional therapy to “assist” in a return to balance.
How long can a person expect to be in treatment?
There is no one answer to the length of treatment. Some clients are immediately helped and some are not. It does, however, require at least 3 treatments to have a good evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment. One would not take only ONE pill of a medication and expect to be fully healed. The same holds true for this modality. Balance CANNOT be FULLY achieved with ONE treatment. Many clients, because they feel better, more relaxed and are in less pain after a session, think that one treatment is all that is needed. That is more often not the case. As stated before, however, the number of sessions needed depend on the client himself/herself.
